DIY: Cropped Tee

Post image for DIY: Cropped Tee

As some of you may know, I was in Canada for a week and have just returned. While I was in Quebec City, my cousin Jessica and I saw a really cute touristy tee that we decided we’d jazz up once we got back home. I already own and love a cropped tee from Urban Outfitters, so I figured we could try cutting up the shirts so we could actually wear them without feeling like total dweebs. Also, the Urban cropped tee I got was around $30 and I wanted another one for zilch.

Yes. I know that “making a cropped tee” sounds like the easiest thing in the world. I mean, I’ll admit it’s not rocket science (as Miss a La Playa has pointed out quite humorously to the left here).

But we did figure out some tricks to the trade (can you imagine that I actually semi-messed up? :P). This works for any old camp ’93 or funky-print tee that’s been gathering dust for the past 29348725 years because you couldn’t find a time to wear it.

What you’ll need:

  • Old tee
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Tee with boat neck
  • Pen

Estimated time: 10 minutes

SS Cropped Tee Neck Outline Step 1:

Trace and cut the front half of the boat neck using the boat neck tee that you have (if you don’t have one, cut 3 inches around the existing neckline). Note: Do not cut the back of the neck line yet.

SS Cropped Tee Back Neck Step 2:

Important! The back neck line should go straight across where the white dotted line is and NOT dip as much as mine did. (This was where I messed up, so my cropped tee falls off my shoulders instead of staying put. Oh well, it’s quite sexy that way too :P).

SS Cropped Tee Fold Step 3:

Try on the tee and fold it up to see where you want it be cropped. A good guideline is about 9.5 inches down from the armpit, but you can also just eyeball it. Mark where you want to cut the shirt with pen.

Yes, that’s my belleh.

SS Cropped Tee JCrop Step 4:

Outline with a pen and ruler and cut straight across.

SS Cropped Tee Me Step 5:

Weeeeee! You’re done. Enjoy and impress! (P.S. You can also trim one inch off the sleeves to make the shirt even cuter).

Me! HAHA. Yes, I’m Asian and don’t wear shoes at home.

Note: I know Fall’s coming up, so you can wear the cropped tees with cute black tank tops under them to keep warm :)
